All of a sudden a news story breaks and immediately all the big news agencies and big media outlets around the world will be "on the story". When the news broke about the former South African President Nelson Mandela being in hospital this is exactly what happened.
It all started with the former President and his closest family being spotted entering Milpark hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Why, you ask, is it that the journalists could have spotted Mandela going to hospital? Do they follow him day and night? Well, the answer is yes! All the big media houses and all the foreign correspondents in Johannesburg are housed together very close to the hospital where Mandela has his specialists surgeons (doctors). There is even a camera directed at the hospital entrance 24 hours a day just in case something would happen to the former President.
Most of the time events become news stories because the media are prepared for soemthing to happen. Mandela is one of the most prominent figures in world politics in the latter part of the 21st century and as such anything that has to do with the former South African President is likely to become the news story of the day. Most media outlets will already have stories, soundbites (ljudfiler) and interviews on file - ready to publish or broadcast if something would happen.
That is how news becomes news most of the time!
