When a big news story breaks, you are often forced to work with official sources. In the case of the Mandela story the media are now accusing the official sources such as the Mandela Foundation, the Government and the ANC of misleading the media. The officials on the other hand are saying that the media are falsely accusing them of being misleading. The instead say that the media are spreading rumours and coming up with conspiracy theories.
This shows just how hard it can be to work with official sources and to in your own mind sort out what the truth is. It is very easy to be misled by rumours and/or people with a certain agenda. One thing you can be sure of as a journalist is that all sources needs to be verified. Most people do have an agenda and it is for you to make sure that you are aware of this and that you always double check your information and not let yourself be used by anyone!
